BOLD / Part One

Posted on by jon in culture, evangelism, life choices, mission, random thoughts | Leave a comment

God has been teaching me about boldness over the last few months. I just want to share with you today a few things I believe He has been teaching me about this character trait; some of the things I’m wrestling with right now.

As I see it, there are a number of areas of our lives where boldness is needed. Let’s look at three of them today. I’ll cover three more tomorrow.

I’ll go with a first-person perspective here:

  1. BOLD obedience. Obeying God is easy when God’s will lines up with my own plans. But when the voice of God points me in another direction, the decision to obey is bold. Take my decision to leave my former church in early 2011. My plan was to stay put. My plan was to do what made sense logically, financially, and responsibly in my life and the lives of my family. God called me out of that, however. Following that call took boldness. I’m not trying to toot my own horn here. In fact, I was literally terrified at the thought of what it would take to make all of this happen at that time. However, in retrospect, the decision to be obedient to the Lord was one that He blessed.
  2. BOLD communication. I used to be a very “beat around the bush” kind of person. I was pretty passive-agressive. I never really told people what was on my mind. There are still times when this creeps back in, but like I said, these are things I’m working through. I’ve had some conversations with some people recently that have required me to be very straightforwardly honest, regardless of the cost, and God has proven to honor those discussions. I’m learning that being as upfront as possible with people is a spiritual character trait. It carries over well to evangelism. Talking to someone about Jesus isn’t easy, and isn’t something we can dance around.
  3. BOLD love and compassion. The Lord has been completely changing how I view people. I’m not sure when exactly this started, but I know that at this point in my life I can honestly say that I am viewing every person alive and a child that is loved by a Heavenly Father unconditionally, and I am to love people in the same way. THIS IS HARD. But when I put my own life into perspective, I am incredibly thankful that my God loves me regardless of anything I’ve ever done because of who He is and what He has done.

I believe these three principles of boldness, if applied directly, can drastically improve our marriages, our parenting, our friendships, our churches, and our culture in major ways.

Be bold today. Have bold conversations. Be boldly obedient. Love people boldly.

Tomorrow I’ll share three other areas of boldness that can completely change our lives – if we’re willing.

How can you be bold right now?

Here’s how we make a difference.

Here are the two “Year In Review” videos I did for Vertical Church. We used these during our message this morning, which was a celebration of all the things God has done in and through our church in 2011. Check ‘em out!

Vertical Christmas / What You Didn’t See

As awesome as Vertical’s Christmas services were, there was something about what went on behind-the-scenes to make those services happen that made it even more special to me. Here’s a list of several things happened that most people who came to these services didn’t see, along with a few fun facts (and a few pictures):

  • The nearly 5-hour setup on Tuesday night as we battled sound issues, power issues, and many other unknowns. To see the patience practiced by our amazing volunteers was indeed a beautiful thing. I saw people that night who would not leave until everything was as it should be. There was no “settling.” Everyone knew that we were not doing this for ourselves, but to reach the lost this Christmas. Fun fact: We actually had band rehearsal while everything was being setup. It was sort of neat to rehearse these songs while people were setting up the backdrops, testing lights, etc. Our team worked together so well given the circumstances.
  • The intense rehearsals by the band leading up to the event. We did our whole set with loops and a click track (sans the first song), and the band BROUGHT IT big time. We rehearsed the songs for weeks ahead of time. Fun fact: “Everything Changed” almost didn’t make the set. I thought, “this song isn’t really ‘congregational’,” so I’m not sure if we need to do it. However, after playing it on a Sunday morning prior, we decided it had to go in.
  • The filming of the Christmas testimony videos. I had the privilege of working with James Lewis of JIL’s Audio & Video to shoot and edit these videos. As we were filming, I was constantly thinking, “This is going to speak to someone. I know it.” Fun fact: Each of the videos was around 5 minutes long. However, we had about 1 hour and 20 minutes worth of footage to work with! Definitely a daunting task. Each of our three volunteers definitely let the Lord speak through them. Also, the music behind each video was all original, composed in Reason and Garageband.
  • The diligent prayer, study of God’s Word, and spiritual support offstage. There were countless times when Mike would be preaching, Rhonda would be singing a capella, I’d be about to walk out for “Everything Changed,” and many other times, when there would be impromptu prayer lifted up for that person right behind the curtain offstage. It blessed my heart to hear and see the prayers, laying on of hands, all the way down to tears cried in joy for our brothers and sisters being allowed to do what we do in the name of Jesus. Fun fact: On Friday night, I was so emotionally overcome by “Everything Changed” that I was literally in tears when I walked off stage. Luckily, I walked right into the embrace of one of my brothers in Christ who immediately prayed for and with me. Pray now – speak life.

There were many other moments just like these that only a few of us got to see. These are just a few. But the reason for this post is to let you know that God was working on multiple levels that week, and in the weeks leading up to it. This was a Christmas season that literally changed my life.

…and we didn’t even have church on Sunday. :)
