Here are the two “Year In Review” videos I did for Vertical Church. We used these during our message this morning, which was a celebration of all the things God has done in and through our church in 2011. Check ‘em out!

As awesome as Vertical’s Christmas services were, there was something about what went on behind-the-scenes to make those services happen that made it even more special to me. Here’s a list of several things happened that most people who came to these services didn’t see, along with a few fun facts (and a few pictures):
The nearly 5-hour setup on Tuesday night as we battled sound issues, power issues, and many other unknowns. To see the patience practiced by our amazing volunteers was indeed a beautiful thing. I saw people that night who would not leave until everything was as it should be. There was no “settling.” Everyone knew that we were not doing this for ourselves, but to reach the lost this Christmas. Fun fact: We actually had band rehearsal while everything was being setup. It was sort of neat to rehearse these songs while people were setting up the backdrops, testing lights, etc. Our team worked together so well given the circumstances.
The intense rehearsals by the band leading up to the event. We did our whole set with loops and a click track (sans the first song), and the band BROUGHT IT big time. We rehearsed the songs for weeks ahead of time. Fun fact: “Everything Changed” almost didn’t make the set. I thought, “this song isn’t really ‘congregational’,” so I’m not sure if we need to do it. However, after playing it on a Sunday morning prior, we decided it had to go in.
The filming of the Christmas testimony videos. I had the privilege of working with James Lewis of JIL’s Audio & Video to shoot and edit these videos. As we were filming, I was constantly thinking, “This is going to speak to someone. I know it.” Fun fact: Each of the videos was around 5 minutes long. However, we had about 1 hour and 20 minutes worth of footage to work with! Definitely a daunting task. Each of our three volunteers definitely let the Lord speak through them. Also, the music behind each video was all original, composed in Reason and Garageband.
The diligent prayer, study of God’s Word, and spiritual support offstage. There were countless times when Mike would be preaching, Rhonda would be singing a capella, I’d be about to walk out for “Everything Changed,” and many other times, when there would be impromptu prayer lifted up for that person right behind the curtain offstage. It blessed my heart to hear and see the prayers, laying on of hands, all the way down to tears cried in joy for our brothers and sisters being allowed to do what we do in the name of Jesus. Fun fact: On Friday night, I was so emotionally overcome by “Everything Changed” that I was literally in tears when I walked off stage. Luckily, I walked right into the embrace of one of my brothers in Christ who immediately prayed for and with me. Pray now – speak life.

Putting together the music for the testimony videos
We had a small children’s environment for the kids of our volunteers. It was upstairs in the theatre and was an incredible blessing!
Clearly I won this game of “red light, green light.”
Scott Shaver, who leads our production area, built this awesome stand for our confidence monitors. GO SCOTT!
I was challenged by Brandon, our Student Pastor, to a game of “red light, green light.”
Shooting Greg’s video

There were many other moments just like these that only a few of us got to see. These are just a few. But the reason for this post is to let you know that God was working on multiple levels that week, and in the weeks leading up to it. This was a Christmas season that literally changed my life.
Vertical’s first Christmas services were truly amazing. There was a definite presence of God throughout the Carolina Civic Center, and we saw over 50 people give their lives to Christ. It was beautiful. For those of you who would like to relive the week that was, here is a list of the videos we showed. However, what was most moving to me, was what most people in attendance didn’t see. More on that tomorrow.
For now, I want to share our set for the services. We did this set three times. The first, on Wednesday night, was reserved for our volunteers and FUZE Student Ministry. All three services were identical. We use Planning Center for our service programming, and if you’re not using it in your church, you should be. I honestly can’t imagine how we’d do what we do every week without it. But I digress.
Here’s a snapshot of the service program:
Definitely a jam-packed night!
We kicked things off with “Run Rudolph Run” by Chuck Berry. I had a discussion with one of our production members prior to the service as to whether “reindeers” is a word. It isn’t. I didn’t think so.
Then was this cool video:
After that, and a welcome from Brandon, we went into the first of three testimony videos. The first was from one of our parking lot volunteers, Greg Blaine.
Then we moved on to our first worship song of the night, “Do You Hear,” from North Point Worship (pardon the brief ad at the beginning).
We moved right into “All Creation Sing” next, also by North Point. No video available.
Then we threw together a mix of traditional carols during the offering. This was actually a very powerful part of the service. After that, we played a video that has been circulating Facebook ever since, called “A Social Network Christmas.”
After that video, we heard a reading from Luke 2:1-21, and went into the powerful song, “Everything Changed,” by Eddie Kirkland (also of North Point). Here’s the actual video from one of the nights:
After that song came the second testimony video, by one of our worship leaders, Rhonda Lovin.
After Rhonda’s video, she came out and led a beautiful a capella rendition of “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus.” It was truly amazing and I could sense the hand of God on her during that song. When the song was over, we showed the final testimony video, by Meredith Allen.
After Mike P’s message (which hit home for SO many of us), we closed out the service with the bridge of Hillsong’s “Came to My Rescue.”
