Let’s admit it. We all like to lay low from time to time when it comes to fulfilling the Great Commission. There are a lot of us who don’t want all the baggage that goes along with sharing Jesus with others. Sometimes it’s because we’re overwhelmed. Sometimes it’s because we’re afraid. Sometimes it’s because we feel foolish or, come on now, even ashamed. This past Sunday morning, our lead pastor Mike P. started off his message by talking about how … →

Today, I spent an hour in our local mall (if you’d call it that), sitting quietly, observing the teenagers that walked by. Sort of like “people-watching.” I did it for a Cultural Observation Project I’m doing for a class, but it became much more of a required assignment. I didn’t know where any of these kids came from. I didn’t know anything about their family lives. I didn’t know their struggles, their joys, their passions, or their hardships. But I … →

Howdy all – as I type this I’m sitting on the floor in one of the many “throughways” of the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA. I’m here for the National Youth Workers’ Convention, an annual gathering of youth ministry folks put together by Youth Specialties. This is my second time here – I’m not sure that makes me a veteran, but I’m going with it anyway. So, let’s catch up on what’s happened so far.
Although we’ve been back from FITS for a couple of days now, I realized that I forgot to give a recap of our final day of the retreat. So here goes… I got up a bit earlier than usual in order to take in that last Jekyll Island sunrise. Unfortunately, the sun had already risen, but no problem. I had some great “quiet time” and then met with James and Katie to head down to the last counselor meeting.
Wow – Day 4. It seems like we just got here – how can I be recapping day 4 already? And as I type this, it’s our final day. Amazing. One of the really funny things at Fun in the Son every year is the opportunity to have the staff come and wake your kids up in the morning. This is done in a variety of fashions, involving everything from air horns to halloween costumes. I should also mention that … →

I didn’t get a chance to update the blog yesterday, as we had a lot going on. Let’s get right to it… Yesterday’s counselor devotion, which goes along with our counselor meeting ever morning, continued our mini-series on brokenness. This is led by the CEO of Youth Conference Ministries, Dr. Chuck Neder. I’ve heard Chuck speak on a number of occasions and I’m always amazed at his ways of relating Scripture to life. After breakfast, we went, yet again, to … →

As I type this from my hotel room, I can hear the faint, yet distinguishable sounds of a thumping subwoofer. This can only mean that the annual Fun in the Son LUAU is under way. It’s kind of an “opening party” for the kids. I use the time to unwind and, as you can tell, blog. Today started off with a 7:30am wakeup. James, Katie and I had our morning counselor’s breakfast (or, actually, we just had coffee), and the … →

So as a lot of you know, yesterday I embarked on a 4.5 hour trip to Jekyll Island, GA, with a group of 7 teenagers and 2 other chaperones, for the annual Fun in the Son conference. I’ve been on this trip many times, and have really had a blast each year. The ride was very smooth (aside from the normal “bumpiness” that comes with riding on a church bus), and we made good time. After paying our entrance fee … →

I’m a strong believer in the power and effectiveness of casual conversation, so much so that I dedicated an entire chapter to it in my book, “Where’s the ‘Why’ in Youth Ministry?” called “Youth Ministry and Dental Assisting.” Casual conversation can be one of the greatest social tools as well as ministry aspects you have. Id like to share three situations that I’ve witnessed over the past two days that have really made this more evident to me.
